Feature Artist for It's Ornamental - Welcome Cathryn!

Hello Everyone!

Niki here and I am so excited to finally get the chance to introduce you to our Feature Artist for November. She was the winner of my "Mixed Media Makeover" challenge in September. Welcome Cathryn Wood of Strangely Creative!!

Cathryn is an amazing crafter. She is such an amazeballs and versatile crafter. She has also been known to teach some interesting techniques. Every time I visit her blog, I learn something new. She shares some of these techniques with this gorgeous design!

I think you will all agree that Cathryn is a creative force to be reckoned with and I am so proud of the project she put together for our current challenge "It's Ornamental"! Feast your eyes on this!! Not only did she design a gorgeous, vintage display box but she made 2! What! Shut the front door! Both are stupendous and make perfect displays for any house during the holidays! I can go on and on about these but you should know more about this lovely, and Strangely Creative lady!

***

I am thrilled to be chosen as Feature Artist for such a lovely challenge blog as Anything But Cute - I am Cathryn Wood, although I am known as Strangely Creative.

I have always loved art and crafts, and have had huge fun within the industry and along the way have made some lovely friends as well.   I have taught art all over the UK and Holland, designed various products, done TV work, and just had a great time! I am always laughing, and hope to keep it that way!

"It's Ornamental" is such an inspiring challenge - straight away I knew that I wanted to do something using a box canvas, and that would stand alone.  Also I wanted to use my faux microscope slide technique.

First of all I created the faux microscope slide by choosing an image (I collage a whole sheet of images at once). Laminated it, and for the back of the slide used some hardboard but you could cut an old book cover, grey board etc to size.

Next, I stuck some kitchen foil to some double sided tape, and attached this around the edges to look like soldering,  It is really effective!  There is a tutorial on my blog for this which I hope you will view.

So here is my "stuff" - my start point!   A canvas, a cotton spool for the base, 2 faux slides (I couldn't decide which one to use at this point), a frame cut from scrapbook paper, a crown I cut from foam-board and 2 bells.

First of all I die cut some snowflakes and glittered them up and then stuck them to the back of the canvas,

The next stage was to paint the back and sides of the canvas with a colour darker than the scrapbook paper (I used a deep Rookwood Red).   Then glued the scrapbook paper frame into place and drilled a small hole into the top of the frame.

I cut and shaped a length of card to look like hanging snow, and glued this to the top of the frame then used texture paste over the card, on the inside of the frame and around the edges and also glittered it whilst it was wet.

The foam board crown was covered with scrapbook paper and then the edges neatened using the faux soldering idea (as used on the faux slides).  Then I inked the edges of both frame and crown, the 25 comes from the Tim Holtz Salvage Stickers Lost and Found collection.   The key is from the TH Alterations movers and shapers die, and its actually 10 layers of card stuck together.

I gathered together various bits of lace, the large bundle in the front I dyed with tea for a really vintage feel.

I then decided I wanted the frame to stand proud from the cotton reel, so drilled another hole and glued some doweling into it.  The lace was glued onto the back of the canvas in layers so its really full, then I added some Stickles in Diamond for further interest. I sunk the key into the foam-board and then glued it into place.

The next step was to tie the bells onto some thread and stick the thread along the back of the slide, and up through the hole in the canvas where I glued it firmly down.   The slide moves slightly and looks really good.

Finally the crown was glued into place and I added some more Stickles along with a red bow and popped it into the cotton reel!

I enjoyed it so much I made a second one - exactly the same way but slightly larger and using cardboard numbers instead of the crown.

I hope you have enjoyed this project and feel inspired!

Hello Everyone!

Georgie here and I am so excited to finally get the chance to introduce you to our Feature Artist for October. Welcome IrinaR of Handmade by Irina Rakovets!!

Irina is an amazing crafter. She is a wowzers-style mixed media artist with such an eye for texture, layers and detail.

I think you will all agree that Irina is a creative force to be reckoned with and I am so proud of the project she put together for our current challenge "31 Days of Halloween"! Feast your eyes on this!! Her 3D back to front canvas is jaw dropping to say the least, so much texture, great use of layering and colours - don't you just love that speckled use of orange?!!. This has for me, Halloween down to a tee!

Here is a little more about Irina:
--------------------------------------

I am Irina Rakovets - many people know me under the name IrinaR (my blog Скрап-ХоббиМания). I live with my family in a picturesque corner of the Gulf of Finland, near St. Petersburg.

For about three years as a scrap came into my life and is not going to leave. We can not say that I am an adherent of any one style, although very much like Vintage, Shabby, but Steampunk attracts me, especially because lately I've been very fond of the paint, so often my work can not do without the mix-media. You could say that I was "scrap omnivorous": I like to make albums and notebooks, canvases, pages and greeting cards, and even my last love - tags.
I would be very happy if my work will inspire you.
Hello everybody!
This month I have the honor to be invited to the designer of a very interesting and creative Challenge Blog Аnything But Cute and inspire with CHALLENGE HOSTESS - Sara Emily in CHALLENGE THEME:

That's my job - altered canvas Art.

Now, a more or less detailed description of the process.
1. I used to make my canvas size 15х20sm, and as usual it backwards.
2. primed with acrylic primer on both sides.
3. Use the template (stars) and texture paste applied pattern. Glued the net (imitation cobweb)
4. Examples of suitable and pasted on chipbord (home of the pumpkin and cut herself from the beer carton)

5. All the meticulously painted with black acrylic primer.
6. It seemed to me that chipbord looks like something inexpressive, so for a more pronounced texture I added texture paste craquelure and texture paste with glass beads.

7. Then again, covered with black acrylic and add orange accents. The windows and the month after painting acrylic, flooded-glossy accent. I use acrylic paint "gold of the Incas", finger (I also do do not urge, I just so convenient) color the projecting parts of the canvas (composition).
8. glued the remaining chipbord and apply black acrylic orange accents.
A bat is glued to a piece of the overlay, and then the inside of the canvas.

9. And so finished canvas.

Inspiration to you.

I hope that seeing Irina's wonderful creation will inspire you to join me for our current challenge...

Feature Artist for Mixed Media Makeover - Welcome Nataly!

Hello Everyone!

Samra here and I am so excited to finally get the chance to introduce you to our Feature Artist for September. She was the winner of my "Summer Romance" challenge in July. Welcome Nataly  of My Scrap Dessert!!

Nataly is an amazing crafter. Her work brings so much inspiration and attention to detail is immaculate! Textures that she creates in her projects are out of this world and color palettes she uses are so captivating...

I think you will all agree that Nataly is a creative force to be reckoned with and I am so proud of the project she put together for our current challenge "Mixed Media Makeover"! Feast your eyes on this!! What a breath taking work of art!

Hi! My name is Nataly and I was honored to be the featured artist at Anything but Cute. It's the inspiring place where people create the most beautiful things, isn't it?
A few words about myself.

I'm from Ukraine. I live in Kharkiv with my husband and my cat. I'm a teacher with the heart of an artist. My craft experience started a couple of years ago. I love creating everything: albums, tags, cards, notepads, layouts. But my favourite style is Mixed Media with no doubt! I love playing with texture pastes, paints, sprays, embossing powders, stamping... You're welcome to visit my blog where you can find some more information.
For this challenge  I pulled out a photo frame I  didn't want  to complete for a long time  because I was not happy with it at all)))))))))) I didn't like the way it had turned out to be...
Here it is
Looks not very nice, isn't it?
I made up my mind to give the second chance to this photo frame.
Would you like to see how it looks now?

Looks quite different and now I can say I'm completely happy with my new photo frame!!!!
Here're some more close ups:

And now I'd like to share some pics of the process in case you'd like to give the second chance to your old photo frames))))
Are you ready? Let's get start it!
Firstly, remove all embellishment and then apply a thick coat of texture paste. The next step while the texture paste is wet take the wide brush and move it gently on the surface of paste making the texture of wood. It's very easy!

When the texture paste is completely dried, paint it with acrylic paints. I usually use more than one color.

Let the paint dry completely. The next step is to cover with one more layer of paint of contrast color. Wait only for 3-5 minutes. This time don't let it dry completely.

Using the baby wipe, gently remove (wipe out)  a bit of  wet paint so you can see  the wood  texture begins to appear.

After the paint is dried, I randomly sprinkled the embossing powder here or there and melted it.

Now it's time to play with  Magicals from Lindy's. And It's my favourite part! Play as much as you want to achieve the color you will be happy with.

Then add a bit of stamping and decorate the frame! Give the final touch by splashing randomly white paint over your project.  So the project is ready!

I hope you feel inspired. Thank you! You still have time to join the challenge this month
I hug you all, Nataly

WOW, is about all I can muster! My vocabulary escapes me ...Just as I said earlier, the textures and color palette she uses in her work are out of this world and so captivating!

I hope that seeing Nataly's wonderful creation will inspire you to join me for our current challenge... Mixed Media Makeover!

You have until the 4th of October to play - and you'll find all the challenge details as well as lots of inspiration from the brilliant Anything But Cute design team by clicking on the challenge link.

Feature Artist for Making Magic - Welcome Mayoori!

Hello Everyone!

Cec here and I am so excited to finally get the chance to introduce you to our Feature Artist for August. She was the winner of my Make It Maculine challenge in June. Welcome Mayoori Jain of Butterflies N' Buttons!!

Mayoori is a master at mixed media and while I was in love with her masculine project, which is why I chose it, I was blown away with the depth of her talent when I went back to her blog to have a closer look at all her creations.  There I found a variety of altered art and layouts that oozed technique and texture.  I recommend you spend some time lurking around her blog and be prepared to be as inspired as I am.

I think you will all agree that Mayoori is a creative force to be reckoned with and I am so impressed with the project she put together for our current challenge Making Magic! Feast your eyes on this!! Mayoori has altered a journal cover that now bears no resemblance to its original form but captures the texture and colour of the mood board beautifully.

Hello ABC fans and followers.

I am Mayoori ,living in beautiful Seattle city with my 2  loving teenage daughters and very supportive husband.  I have been scrapbooking since 3 years, trying all the styles, learning from fellow crafters . Since few months I have been trying mixed media projects and I am thoughly enjoying it.

Today I am  sharing this journal cover.I am  really excited to be part of this very interesting and challenging mood board put together by Georgie.

The idea is to create magic through art. I have used an old wooden paint brush to make the wand.

hot glued a big bead to the brush.at the top and the bottom.

then drip the hot glue making some patterns and embedding some small beads for more texture

Painted the the wad black with the black gesso.

applied some golden paint and some metallic copper paint

applied some black crackle medium , once dried applied green and golden paint.

I stencilled an old cardboard and then cut two corner pieces out of it. Then added an embossed chipboard.

Hope you will like it.
